How To Change Nameservers for Your domain From the client area?

Introduction

This article explains how to change your domain’s nameservers directly from your BigCloudy client area. Changing nameservers allows you to point your domain to a new hosting provider or DNS manager.
Follow these steps to update them safely and ensure your website stays connected to the correct server.

1. Log in to the Client Area

Go to your Client Area login and log in using your registered email and password.

Tip: Bookmark your client area URL for quick access next time.

2. Go to “Domains”

From the dashboard, click on the Domains tab to view all your registered domains

3. Select Your Domain

Find the domain you want to manage and click Manage Domain or Manage DNS

4. Find the Nameservers Section

Under the Nameservers section, you’ll see options like:

  • Use default nameservers

Select this if you want to use our hosting default nameserver which are:

ns1.bigcloudy.com
ns1.bigcloudy.com

  • Use custom nameservers (enter below)

Choose this to specify your own nameservers.

Note: DNS propagation may take up to 24–48 hours for global updates to complete.

5. Wait for DNS Propagation

Changes may take up to 24 hours to fully propagate globally. During this time, your website may load intermittently between old and new settings.

Notes

  • Nameserver changes may take 24–48 hours to propagate globally, depending on DNS caching.
  • Ensure you copy and paste the nameservers exactly as provided to avoid outages.
  • If your domain is locked or pending verification, nameserver changes may not apply until the issue is resolved.
  • Some TLDs have specific restrictions on nameserver formats or require a minimum of 2 nameservers.
  • DNS hosted with the previous provider will stop working once nameservers are updated—ensure all required DNS records exist on your new DNS service.

Conclusion

You’ve successfully updated your domain’s nameservers from the BigCloudy client area. This process allows you to control where your domain points, whether to BigCloudy’s servers or a third-party host.
Remember that DNS changes may take time, so be patient while they fully propagate worldwide.

FAQ

How long does it take for nameserver changes to update globally?

Nameserver updates typically take 24–48 hours to fully propagate, though some regions may update sooner.

Do I need to unlock my domain before changing nameservers?

In most cases, unlocking is only required for domain transfers, not nameserver updates. However, some registrars may require unlocking to modify nameservers.

Will my website or email go down after updating nameservers?

They may go down if the new DNS provider does not have the correct DNS records. Always verify your DNS records before switching nameservers.

Can I change nameservers for a domain that is expired?

Most registrars do not allow nameserver changes on expired domains. You must renew the domain first.

Why do I see an error when saving new nameservers?

Errors usually occur due to invalid nameserver formatting, missing DNS glue records (for custom nameservers), or TLD-specific restrictions. Double-check the nameserver values and try again.
